My Healing Journey with Fibromyalgia and Reiki

with

Fibromyalgia and Reiki

I began writing this blog www.MaryJaneBrigger.Com  three years ago as a way to cope with the pain and grief of a chronic illness. At that time I had lost my life and career to Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. As anyone who has Fibromyalgia (the CDC now lists Chronic Fatigue as Fibromyalgia) knows one of its most debilitating symptoms is mental fogginess or “brain fog.”  This is when you cannot effectively think which severely affects your mental processing. Reading, holding a conversation, listening to someone talk to you, normal tasks we take for granted became roadblocks to living my life.

Since Fibromyalgia includes extreme loss of physical and mental energy, my days were spent curled up in a recliner unable to sit up or walk across the room. My body screamed with pain both physically and emotionally. My family, friends and colleagues knew me as a high energy person and now I no longer had the energy to keep up my relationships with them.

Loss of Family Life and Friends

Friends became distant or gone all together, professional colleagues were no more since I had to quit work due to the debilitating effects of the Fibromyalgia. My family life which was once vibrant and close now was reduced to occasional phone calls or visits. And these became few and short between as the Fibromyalgia left me too weak to converse or be an active part of their lives anymore.

Trying to Understand Fibromyalgia

Friends and colleagues come and go in life, but the loss of my family life as “”Mom” became a grief that still haunts me to this day. Fibromyalgia is a difficult disease for people to understand. You may look fine, but the inside of your body is completely rewired and scrambled. It’s hard enough for us with the disease to understand much less for those who love you.

My wonderful husband Jack has always been supportive and loving through this journey. I am very fortunate and blessed to have this wonderful man in my life. Many people with Fibromyalgia have spouses who refuse to see what is happening and can be very cruel about it. This only increases the disease’s impact due to the stress from people and environments of not understanding or choosing to not understand how debilitating this disease really is.

Grief and Loneliness

Fibromyalgia can be a lonely world of being judged and ostracized by others which creates new internal wounds and opens old ones. These inner wounds are embedded within the body with Fibromyalgia becoming the gatekeeper as an energy block to healing. My life as I had known it was gone over night. Who I had been was dead and I grieved to have me back. It was time to mourn in order to prepare me for my Healing Journey with Fibromyalgia and Reiki.
